Discuss Stem cell research
You should now have an idea of some of the moral and ethical issues surrounding the future of the field of genetics through the documentary film dealing with cystic fibrous, , as well as the futuristic film, GATTACA.
The movie GATTACA is a fictionalized account of a young man who knows his genetic imperfections, is discriminated against by society and his family, and is told he will never succeed in society or achieve success. Yet he finds the inner strength enabling him to reach his goal and overcome the discrimination and the problems caused by his genetic imperfections. The antagonist is a character who is genetically designed to be the best, and yet still does not acheive his goal or live up to the standards that society has set for him. This film addresses the idea that we are not limited by our bilogical makeup, that fate and desire can be just as determining the outcome of ones’s life.
Explain what role genetics plays in the determination of who we are and how our future as individuals, and a society, could be shaped by the idea of human genetic engineering.
