11th grade English Course Description: C1
Literature
This class will survey American literature from earliest times to the present. The major units will include the Native Americans, the Puritans,
the Age of Reason, the Romantic Era, Realism, the Harlem Renaissance, and the 20th Century. There will also be an introductory unit on Language which will take the first few weeks. There will be many homework assignments from the text book. There will be some lectures, so please keep a notebook. We will also read 5 or 6 novels.
Writing
There will be a number of mid-length writing assignments, including personal essays, persuasive essays (editorials), creative writing (including poetry), and academic writing (mostly literary analysis.)
SAT Prep & Vocabulary
There will be a week of preparation for the PSAT’s in early October and a week of SAT prep in May. There will also be 15 vocabulary words given out on the first day of class each week. There will be a quiz on those words at the beginning of the next class.
Grading
Your quarter grade will be based on the following (The percentages may change slightly from quarter to quarter):
Writing assignments (30%)
Reading and Homework assignments (40%)
Vocabulary quizzes (20%)
Class work (10%) (Including participation and behavior)
You have one week to make up missed quizzes, after which point they become zeros. You may retake vocabulary quizzes if you do poorly the first time, and the two grades will be averaged, but you only have one week to retake vocabulary quizzes. Late papers and homework will be penalized. Homework will not be accepted after class discussion of the assignment. You will be given a printout of your grades and assignments approximately every two weeks.
