Unit 1
Literary Genres- Different types of writing and their purposes
Unit 2
Non Fiction- Reading and writing different types of non fiction
Unit 3
Fiction- Reading and writing different types fiction
Unit 4
Open Response Questions- Knowing how to respond to different types of open response questions
This unit will include MCAS writing prompts.
Assessments:
-Students will use three MCAS writing prompts to outline the basic approaches to open response questions, and use prior knowledge to write a sample response.
-Quizzes on the ROAR strategy to approaching open response questions; using grade level readings
Unit 5
Dramatic Literature-
Assessments:
-Comprehension checks, discussion, and tests/quizzes
-Students will evaluate a play, which the class will read together, and then compile a poster campaign based on the following criteria:
Unit 6
Poetry-
Assessments:
-Daily class discussions
-Quizzes on the elements of poetry, and the analysis of poems read in class
-After reading and discussing different types of poetry, and their elements, students will prepare:
* a poetry portfolio comprised of five different types of poems, a reflection/introduction, and graphics
* a PowerPoint presentation on a song's lyrics, which includes analysis of poetic elements
Unit 7
"Myself, as a Writer" Portfolio- It is time to use what you have learned this year.
Assessments:
-One piece of expository writing, of the student's choice, will be used in a revision workshop.
-Formal assessment will be based on the student's completion of the workshop, and a final draft of the student's selected piece of writing
Unit 8
Creative Writing-
Within each unit students will practice:
*Vocabulary development
*Grammar development
*Parts of speech
*Proper writing mechanics
*Use of organizational strategies: Graphic organizers, time management, assignment books...
