STUDY STRATEGIES USED BY SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS:
Connect class work to real-life situations
Some students love to learn just for learning. Some students need to be able to apply what they learn to their own lives. After a class or lecture try to apply what was covered to you daily life.
Become and active and involved learner
Making a learning situation active means that you actually understand what you hear or read and can put it into your own words. Try to explain what you read or heard to your parents or another classmate, without looking at your materials.
Identify your preferred learning style
Understanding which of Dunn’s learning styles you fall into will help you understand how you learn and will increase your retention and understanding of material.
Practice patience with the learning process and your progress
Sure there are some people who just seem to understand everything and have a photographic memory, but this is not true for most people. Students learn best by using a variety of strategies, including reviewing notes, making flashcards, completing homework problems, outlining chapters in the textbook or studying in groups. The methods you choose to use will vary from class to class, and from your peers.
Think about what is learned from the “big picture” perspective
Don’t just be happy with the facts, but try to understand how the facts fit into the bigger picture. How do the facts that you are learning apply to the chapter you are reading and the subject you are studying?
Don’t underestimate your ability to be successful, and only rate yourself by your abilities and needs; not others!
