Advance Placement Music Theory
Course Description and Requirements
Studies in AP Music Theory will integrate aspects of melody, harmony, texture, rhythm, form, musical analysis, elementary composition, and, to some extent, history and style. Musicianship skills such as dictation, aural identification, sight-singing, and keyboard harmony are considered an important part of the curriculum.
The ultimate goal of the course is to develop a student’s ability to recognize, understand, describe, and analyze the basic materials and processes of music that are either heard or presented in a score. Aural, sight-singing, written, compositional, and analytical skills will be developed through an integrated approach using listening, performance, written, creative, and analytical exercises.
