· How to contribute and learn from a debate or discussion with your peers.

· How to develop effective multi-media presentations.
· How to write a resume and cover letter.
· How to conduct yourself when looking for / interviewing for a job.
· How to write a top-notch marketing plan.
· To become more comfortable with public speaking in a small-group setting.
· How strategies and techniques learned from studying marketing and sales will better prepare you for life beyond high school.
Marketing “Gear”
You will need to bring the following items with you to EVERY class unless told otherwise:
1. A good-sized 3-ring binder – this is where you will keep all those interesting articles and case studies. This is where you’ll keep your returned work and assignment sheets. It’ll also keep you nice and organized. No more “I lost it, can I have another” or “I left it in my car.”
2. College-Ruled Notebook Paper – have some stashed away in your binder.
3. A Highlighter – for all those interesting articles and case studies! You’ll be using them a lot in college, trust me! Swipe over the most interesting ideas in your reading material, take a quick look at it again at the bell and you’ll be prepared for class discussion.
4. A calculator – you’ll be crunching some numbers and analyzing financial data from time to time.
Course Outline
Marketing is a course that will teach you marketing foundations and functions, prepare you for further study of marketing in higher education, and introduce you to the real world of work. Their will be two text books, Marketing Essentials and Marketing Yourself, in addition to several articles and a few case studies, such as the study of Nantucket Nectars. We will also watch and discuss a current television show, Donald Trump’s The Apprentice. Not only is The Apprentice one of my favorite shows, but more importantly, it introduces many real-world marketing and sales tasks in addition to highlighting the effects of group dynamics in the workplace. My classes from years past have enjoyed them very much. You will also learn how to effectively market yourself, as we
will take the time to write an effective resume and cover letter, and learn the skills necessary to be ready of a college or job interview.
Marketing Essentials will be your main text book and your guide to understanding the foundations of marketing and the many different functions of marketing. Here is a list of the different units we will be covering:
1. The World of Marketing
2. Economics
3. Business and Society
4. Skills for Marketing
5. Selling
6. Promotion
7. Distribution
8. Pricing
9. Marketing Information Management
10. Employability and Career Development
Projects
There will also be two projects over the course of the semester, one per quarter. More details will follow.
Q3 = Ice Buddy Phase 2 / Latin American Marketing Project
Q4 = Marketing Research Paper or leftover choice from above.
Mr. B’s Class Rules
1) Be respectful to everyone at all times
2) No hats or hoods on your heads.
3) You must ask to leave the room and sign out / in.
4) Don’t try to abuse rule #3.
5) Cheating won’t be tolerated and will be taken very seriously
6) If you miss a class, check the website and see me the next day for any work you’ve missed or need to pass in. Any tests / quizzes must be made up in 5 school days (not 5 Marketing classes.)
The Stock Market Game
We will work in teams of 3-4 and learn about the stock market. You might have already done this if you’ve taken Intro to Business or Personal Finance with Mr. Frame. This is a great simulation where you’re given $100,000 and compete against teams from across the state and country. If you’re looking for a new challenge, you may be interested in Protrade.
Field Trips
We will try to take some field trips to visit and learn from local, island entrepreneurs / marketers. I will ask the class for input on favorite businesses on the Vineyard, and we’ll try to go there. We will also schedule an off-island field trip to my college alma mater, Babson College, for their annual celebration of entrepreneurship, Founders Day.
Each spring, Babson inducts highly successful businessmen and women into their Academy of Distinguished Entrepreneurs. In recent years, people such as Arthur Blank (Home Depot), Paul Fireman (Reebok) and Bob Rosenberg (Dunkin Donuts) have been inducted. Two years ago, a small group of business students got the opportunity to meet Magic Johnson and Bob Kraft. At Founders Day, we will get the chance to see many student businesses in operation, and meet some world-class entrepreneurs.
