Math 2
Mr McGrath
Bienvenido/Bemvindo/Bienvenue
Welcome to a new year of learning Math where you will assume the responsibility for your own success. I will do my best to direct and encourage that effort.
Materials
You will need a TI83+ or 84+ calculator, pencil, protractor and straightedge every class. I recommend you buy a good quality compass and bring it to class too.
Math binder - You must have a three-ring binder with loose leaf paper at all times for the exclusive use of Math. It will be graded each quarter. It will be divided into sections labeled – Notes and Reflections/ Exams / Homework / Vocabulary / Theorems and Postulates. The notes section will include any handouts.
Students will keep a chronological index of each entry by date, title and section, for example, (date) 9/12 (title) Requirements and Expectations (section) Notes
This organizational tool will be your personal guide for learning this year. You must read thoughtfully each day as soon as possible after class. Textbooks must be covered if brought to class.
Procedures
Class time will have a standard opening and closing routine.
For the first ten minutes teacher will check homework while students engage in an educational activity which may be following a prompt, reading, writing, reviewing.
For the final ten minutes students will sum up the day’s activities as a reflection under the headings: Learned / Reviewed / Yet to be Mastered. These activities will be recorded in the Notes section of the binder and are important information for daily review.
Homework
Homework is posted on the website and written on the board. If you miss a homework assignment, 20 points will be deducted from a perfect 100 points for the quarter homework grade. To recover 10 of those points you must complete it by the next class and present it to the teacher.
Absences and Make-up Work
Normally you will schedule makeup work with the teacher as soon as possible after an absence. If the assignment was announced or posted before your absence, then it is due the day you return. Unexcused absences receive zero with no opportunity to make it up.
Grading
60% assessments – tests, quizzes, oral and written outcomes, projects
12% Homework – must be presented at the beginning of class
15% Binder – will be collected and graded around the fifth week of school
13% Participation – will be determined by daily self-evaluation of the quality of your class participation, subject to teacher review.
Extra help is available Tuesdays and Thursdays school after or by appointment.
