SPECIALIZED INSTRUCTION:
MVYPS Special Education Department provides specialized instruction and/or related services for students meeting eligibility due to an educational disability in the least restrictive environment through a continuum of services/supports. Students’ Individualized Educational Plans (IEP) are designed with services including, but not limited to: accommodations in the classroom; supports provided from a paraprofessional; participation in a co-teaching classroom; resource room/academic support; small group specialized instruction for specific content areas; and substantially separate classrooms/programs. Students that are found eligible for special education have a right to special education until they meet state and district graduation requirements or until they turn 22 years of age.
The Martha’s Vineyard Public Schools serves students in K through grade 12. Special Education services are provided to eligible students aged 3 to 18 years, or until they graduate from High School. (Secondary school programs provide necessary services until a student’s 22nd birthday or high school graduation, whichever occurs first.)
Specific services are determined through the TEAM meeting process and based upon the needs of individual students. Each school/district within MVYPS provides services based on their own educational model within these guidelines. For students that require more intensive supports and interventions, the Districts utilize a Shared Service Program model. See descriptions for Shared Service Programs (prk-gr. 8) and MVRHS Programs for students with intensive needs.
